The impact that the Comfort of a touching hand can give, you don’t really know untill you had such special experience, as we are about to tell you about now.
Once visiting one of the kinder gardens in Eshowe, one of the smallest children, maybe 1 year but probably less, crawling around on the dirty and hard plain concrete floor, dirty from top to toe, was crying her eyes out and being really restless. She was put on the floor for a nap, the staff put her on a blanket, but she didn’t have the calm or Security to go to sleep.
I went to her lifted her onto the blanket again and laid her down, facing down. While doing this, she stopped crying. Then I got up and immediately she started crying again. I sat down next to her on the blanket and started stroking her back. She immediately calmed down. No more crying, just looking at me, as if she was saying; please, don’t go! I sat there for quite a while, stroking her back and looking down at here, smiling at her. Her eyes were closing more and more, you could see she was about to fall asleep. One of the participating members of the zulusafari trip came over and she found a Chair and sat down, to replace me. The little girl kept calm. All she needed was a bit of attention. Someone who cared about her. Someone who could make her feel safe.
