Because of powerty, young girls get pregnant as a way to get money. Any woman in South Africa will get a small monthly amount when she has children. This is a problem with girls as young as maybe 13 to 14 years old and upwards. It is easy to understand why they do it. When you are so poor that any money or income is welcome and even needed for you to stay alive, then you do what you have to do.

Children of Zululand came up with an idea on how to decrease the number of child pregnancies and maybe even completely erase it. By giving every girl age 15-20 a montly amount to cover living expenses, about the same amount as they would have been given for giving birth to a child, we think that the purpose of having children at such Young age will go away. This project depends on a good system, where girls register for this benefit money and where our co-workers in Africa look after the girls. If ever a girl in the programme get pregnant, our benefin money will stop.
